Phase I of the project consists of expansion of Chayvo field onshore processing facility and a 225 km (140 mi) pipeline for transportation of crude oil westward across Sakhalin Island and Tatar Strait to De-Kastri terminal in the Russian Far East.[5] The consortium reached its peak production rate of 250,000 barrels (34,000 metric tonnes) of oil in February 2007.[2]
WWF and other environmental protection NGOs have criticized the consortium for dangers to environment and traditional lifestyle of indigenous population of Sakhalin caused by the production activities.[6][7]
