Packers Plus Energy Services Inc. is a privately held, Calgary-based oilfield service company that provides completion equipment and services. The company specializes in multi-stage fracturing systems for open hole, horizontal wells and deals with unconventional reservoirs.[1]. Multi-stage fracturing systems are used for hydraulic fracturing, or breaking up tight rock formations to enable release of oil and gas in petroleum reservoirs allowing for segmentation of horizontal wells into sections or stages such that they can be fractured individually. This allows for complete fracture coverage of the entire length of the wellbore.[1][2]. This multi-stage fracturing technique was developed by Packers Plus, but has been adopted by many completions and operations companies, unlocking previously unrecoverable resources.[3]
These systems have opened up previously uneconomic oil and gas reservoirs, such as the Bakken Formation which covers parts of Saskatchewan, Montana and North Dakota.[4][5], the Shaunavon Formation in Saskatchewan and the Montney Formation in British Colombia. Packers Plus is being used in multiple other formations across North America and internationally.[6]
The company was recognized for its success in accessing these complex wells with the 2009 national Entrepreneur of the Year award from Ernst & Young [7]. In June 2010, Packers Plus will travel to Monaco to compete in the global Entrepreneur of the Year competition.[8]
History
In January 2000 Dan Themig, Peter Krabben and Ken Paltzat started Packers Plus to focus on completion technology.[9]. In 2001, Packers Plus was asked to find a method for effectively fracking horizontal wells in Houston, Texas. New technology was needed to access and economically produce from marginal reservoirs throughout North America, which are tihgt rock formations with low permeability. Fracking the tight formations required an extremely high pressure rating and the inflatable production packers being used were not providing an economically feasible solution. In response, Packers Plus developed the multi-stage fracturing system, StackFRAC. The first system was installed in west Texas , followed by a second in the Bakken region.[6].
In 2003, the company opened its first U.S. service centre in Midland, Texas. Over the next six years, it opened eleven more service locations including its U.S. Corporate Office, Technology Center, and Research and Development Center in Houston, Texas. Packers Plus continued expanding into 2005 when the company partnered with Schlumberger to market their technology internationally. Since then, it has opened ten offices worldwide, including in Africa, the Middle East, Asia and the United Kingdom, and has worked in other locations including Central and South America, and Russia.[9]
Packers Plus began working with PetroBakken Energy and Wave Energy in 2007 as the petroleum producers were having extreme difficulty extracting oil and gas, due to low porosity and permeability in the Bakken and Shaunavan Formations, respectively. These two formations became the primary areas of success for Packers Plus.[6]
Throughout 2008 Packers Plus ran numerous completions systems in North American and international oil and gas plays. The company announced the 1000th well completed using the Packers Plus system in the United States in July 2008 and in Canada in December 2008. At this time Packers Plus was running systems in 16 formations in the United States and multiple others in Canada.[10]
In 2009 Packers Plus unveiled the successful implementation of a 20-stage StackFRAC HD system in the Bakken formation.[11] This increase in stimulation zones has been the key to unlocking tight gas formations as the zones can be individually treated to increase overall production.[12] This record was broken by further success in the Bakken where Packers Plus saw the stimulation of a 22-stage StackFRAC HD system.
Current business
Currently, the company has seven locations in Canada including its corporate head office in Calgary, its manufacturing and technology centres in Edmonton, AB and three service centres: Red Deer, Grande Prairie and Estevan. In the United States Packers Plus has three locations in Houston, including a technology center and a Research and Development Center. As well, one office in Casper, Charleston, Conway, Midland and Williston. Individual Packers Plus sales employees operate out of Denver, Texas and Oklahoma.[13]
Today, Packers Plus is running systems various formations throughout Canada, United States and internationally. Packers Plus has created and patented multiple tools for use in openhole completions, such as RapidMATRIX, StackFRAC, TitaniumTM XV, and StackFRAC HD. Packers Plus attributes the success of increased reserve recovery with the increased fracturing stages that have come with this innovative technology. In March 2010 Packers Plus released information on the first successful subsea completion for BP Exploration in the North Sea. The well was successfully accessed through the isolation of fracture zones.[14]
