Platts is a provider of energy and metals information and a source of benchmark price assessments in the physical energy markets. Platts was founded in Cleveland, Ohio in 1909 by Warren C. Platt (1883-1963) to provide "reliable market-based price information" on the oil industry[1].

Purview

From an original focus on the oil industry, Platts gradually expanded its purview to include metals, shipping, and all energy-related markets - oil, coal, natural gas, electricity, nuclear power, petrochemicals, renewables, and emissions.

Global network

Platts is headquartered in New York and operates though a network of 17 offices spanning five continents. Platts' total staff exceeds 600. Its news and pricing staff comprises more than 250 reporters, writers and editors, and is the world's largest independent team of journalists dedicated to the energy industry.[citation needed]

Products & services

Platts publishes news, research, commentary, market data and analysis, and more than 8,500 daily price assessments that are widely used as benchmarks in both physical and futures markets.[citation needed] It delivers real-time news and price information and end-of-day price data; publishes more than 60 newsletters and reports; and produces over 50 sector-specific conferences every year.

Clients

More than 10,000 companies, associations, exchanges, universities and government entities in 150 countries subscribe to Platts' services. Clients span the energy supply chain ranging from exploration companies and refiners to wholesalers and industrial users such as airlines. They include 90 percent of the top 250 energy companies, all of the top 50 power and gas traders, and virtually all of the integrated oil companies. Platts also counts among its clients financial institutions, capital goods suppliers, and professional services firms in law, engineering, consulting and asset management.[citation needed]

Parent company

Platts is a division of The McGraw-Hill Companies, Inc., (NYSEMHP), a leading global information provider, and sister to such brands as Standard & Poor's, J.D. Power & Associates, Aviation Week, and McGraw-Hill Construction. It was acquired by McGraw-Hill in 1953.

Corporate history

In 2000 McGraw-Hill merged Platts with other like assets to turn the company into a provider of energy information. It is part of the Information & Media Services group of McGraw-Hill[1]
