Ronald Ringsrud is an emerald dealer and writer of recent acclaim. He is noted for the new book Emeralds, A Passionate Guide, which could be called an introduction to the world of colored stones through the examples of emeralds.[1] This work draws on Ringsurd's decades of work in the emerald industry and includes the verifying element of a foreword written by John Koivula, the Chief Gemologist at GIA.

Author Background
Ronald Ringsrud possesses a broad background in emerald gemology and the world emerald market. He has given presentations and lectures on these issues since 1986.[2] As the owner of Ronald Ringsrud Company, he was the “host and guide in Bogotá for visits to the emerald marketplace from foreign buyers” as well as guiding “groups from the L.A. County Museum of Natural History and the G.I.A. [Gemological Institute of America] on their trips to the Colombian emerald source.”[3]
Additionally, he published three articles in the prestigious and peer-reviewed journal Gems and Gemology, produced by the Gemological Institute of America (GIA).[4] As a contributor to Gems and Gemology, the author “was a featured speaker at the GIA’s International Gemological Symposium in 1991.”[3] In 2006, Ronald Ringsrud presented at the GIA Gemological Research Conference in San Diego, California with the topic of “Subjectivity in Gemology.”[5]
In an interview with Southern Jewelry News, Ronald Ringsrud describes his rise to the Board of Directors of the American Gem Trade Association (AGTA).[6] He mentions the secrecy and intrigue of the emerald mines of Colombia, stating that “the mines are very shrouded and closed.”[6] Ronald Ringsrud’s enthusiasm for the field has even extended to creating video clips posted on sites such as Youtube.[7][8] Also, his charitable activities in Colombia have been benefiting people in the mining area for more than a decade.[9]
Emeralds, A Passionate Guide<i>
Emeralds, A Passionate Guide<i> is a 2009 non-fiction work published by the author's own company <i>Green View Press<i>.[1] This work is an “adventure into the unique world of emeralds written by an emerald dealer of 25 years experience.”[1] In addition to the textual combination of anecdotes and scientific facts, this guide contains 23 chapters, 70 microphotos and over 250 color photos and illustrations.[1] Chief Gemologist at GIA and co-author of the <i>Photoatlas of Gemstones series, John Koivula wrote this in the foreword: "This book is a true adventure, a work of imagination and creativity, and in that respect it is just like Richard Hughes' Ruby & Sapphire. It is also a complement to John Sinkankas' Emeralds and Other Beryls, and--most importantly--unlike many gem books, a book that is fun to read."[1][10]
The screenwriter Diane Lake reviewed Emeralds, A Passionate Guide<i> as “a book [that] glistens and gleams—that fairly sparkles with its intensity.”[11] Diane Lake is known particularly for her screenwriting work in the film Frida, starring Salma Hayek and nominated for six Academy Awards.[12] Diane Lake’s book review emphasizes the appeal of this novel outside of the gem and jewelry field. As one reviewer states: “The subtitle of Ronald Ringsrud’s new book A Passionate Guide, The Emeralds, The People, Their Secrets has been well selected. The book is not just about an emerald, more specifically a Colombian emerald; it is about a country, its people and one man’s love affair with it all.”[13] This book’s widespread allure is demonstrated through the variety of positive reviews from many different fields.[14][15][16][17][18][19]
Translations
The book is slated to be translated into Spanish, Italian, and Russian in the near future. The Italian translation will be launched in Rome at the 1st Italian Convention of Scientific Gemmology held on June 15–16, 2010.[20]
