Scotia Gas Networks is a holding company of Scotland Gas Networks and Southern Gas Networks based in Horley.[1]
History
The company was formed following National Grid plc's decision to sell four of its local gas distribution zones in order to raise funds for expansion. A consortium made up of Scottish and Southern Energy, Borealis Infrastructure and Ontario Teachers' Pension Plan purchased the Scottish, Southern and South Eastern gas networks. It delivers gas to 5.8 million customers in an area covering all of Scotland and in England from Milton Keynes to Dover in the east and Lyme Regis in the west, including London boroughs to the south of the River Thames with some minor variations in the Vauxhall area, where some postcodes have a shared responsibility with National Grid plc.
Role of Canadian pension funds
Research conducted by the World Pensions Council (WPC) suggests that large US and Canadian pension funds and Asian and MENA area SWF investors have become particularly active in the fields of natural gas and natural gas infrastructure, a trend started in 2005 by the formation of Scotia Gas Networks in the UK.
