The University of Petroleum and Energy Studies (UPES) is the specialised university for the energy and oil sectors. It is situated at Dehradun, india. It was established through an act of the State Legislature of Uttarakhand in the 2003.
UPES is India's first Energy University and Asia's first and only Energy and Core Sector University. UGC and NAAC recognised, UPES offers over 42 graduate, postgraduate and doctoral programs to more than 4200 students in the sectors of oil and gas, power, aviation, shipping, automobile, international business, law, infrastructure, electronics, IT and logistics and supply chain. The Centre for Continuing Education (CCE) and Centre for Aviation Studies (CAS), UPES, offer Executive programs through distance learning mode for the working professionals.
A statutory university, UPES was established in 2003 through an Act (UPES Act, 2003) of the State Legislature of Uttarakhand. It is situated in a picturesque, 27-acre campus in Pondha valley, Dehradun.

UPES is an endeavour of the Hydrocarbons Education and Research Society (HERS), a non profit organizable registered under the Societies Act 1860 dedicated to promoting education and training in energy and allied sectors. HERS comprises eminent individuals from the oil and gas industry including the former Petroleum Secretary, Government of India, senior industry professionals, chiefs of energy and allied sector companies and specialists from national and international organizations.[1]
==Board Of Governors The Board of Governors at UPES constitutes eminent academicians, industry doyens, government representatives and academic administrators and is the highest regulatory and decision-making body responsible for laying down policies, statutes and rules as well as approving the budget and annual report.

UPES is recognized as a Research Institution by the Department of Scientific and Industrial Research (DSIR), a part of the Ministry of Science and Technology, Government of India. This enables UPES to receive grants under the CSIR system. DSIR has a mandate to carry out the activities relating to indigenous technology promotion, development, utilization and transfer with the primary endeavour to promote R&D by the industry and other institutions.

The university has signed a memorandum with UPES that commits the two institutions to "explore the potential for cooperation and active collaboration to foster exchanges in education, training and research", which could include faculty visits, co-op work terms, and involvement of Indian researchers in projects in UW's Research and Technology Park.
Petroleum University of Technology, Iran
It is one of the oldest educational institutions in Iran with prominent faculty members who have played an exceptional role in the oil industry. PUT is also very active in research programs.
Petroleum Gas University of Ploiesti, Romania
PGUP trains higher education specialists for the main branches of the petroleum industry and other fields of national interest. The university trains specialists in the main engineering fields. The university has trained a great number of higher education specialists, both from Romania and from over ninety other countries.

Since 1940, the International Association of Drilling Contractors (IADC) has represented the worldwide oil and gas drilling industry. IADC is dedicated to enhancing the interests of the oil and gas and geothermal drilling and completion industry worldwide. Membership is open to any company involved in oil and gas exploration, drilling or production, well servicing, oilfield manufacturing or other rig-site services.
UPES is an Associate Member of the International Association of Drilling Contractors (IADC) in the category of Training Schools and Universities.
International Institute of Information Technology
The International Institute of Information Technology (I2IT) is an institution that offers advanced postgraduate programs in Information Technology, Biotechnology, Nanotechnology, Oil and Gas, CFD, Engineering and Management. I2IT has signed an MOU with UPES to commence postgraduate programs e.g. MBA in Oil and Gas Management, M. Tech in Gas Engineering and M. Tech in Computational Fluid Dynamics.
Programs offered
UPES offers undergraduate programs in Engineering, awarding B.Tech in various fields, notably in the Oil & Gas, Power and Transportation fields, as well as interdisciplinary programs such as a program in Fire Safety Engineering. It also offers undergraduate programs in Management in similar fields, awarding BBA. Postgraduate programs are similar, awarding M.Tech and MBA degrees, respectively. UPES also offers five year integrated undergraduate legal programs awarding, for instance a B. Tech. in Computer Science and a LL.B. with specialization in Cyber Law, as well as programs that award BA/LL. B. or BBA/LL.B.[2]
Accreditations and recognition
University Grants Commission
UPES is recognized by the University Grants Commission (UGC) under Section 2(f) of the UGC Act, 1956 and is the first university under Public-Private Partnership. UGC is a statutory body of the Government of India, established in 1956 through an Act of Parliament for coordination, determination and maintenance of standards of university education in India.
National Assessment and Accreditation Council
UPES is accredited by National Assessment and Accreditation Council (NAAC) which is an autonomous body established by the University Grants Commission of India to access and accredit institutions of Higher Education in India Department of Scientific and Industrial Research. UPES is recognized as a Research Institution by the Department of Scientific and Industrial Research (DSIR), a part of the Ministry of Science and Technology, Government of India. This enables UPES to receive grants under the CSIR system.

Distance Education Council, IGNOU
UPES' Centre for Continuing Education (CCE) has obtained approval from the Distance Education Council for offering programmes through distance learning mode. The Distance Education Council is a statutory body, part of the Indira Gandhi National Open University (IGNOU) for maintenance of standards in distance/open learning in India.
Association of Indian Universities
UPES has been granted membership of the Association of Indian Universities (AIU), effective from November 2009. This entitles the university to privileges like participation in inter-university sports, library and information services including subscription to University News, and assistance in recognition of degrees in addition to providing a platform for information exchange between the universities.
The Energy Institute, UK
UPES' oil and power sector courses are accredited by the Energy Institute, UK. The institute is a professional body for the energy industry, providing opportunities for career development, learning and networking. Representing almost 13500 individuals and 300 companies across 100 countries, the institute provides a community for those involved in all aspects of energy. This offers Indian Energy professionals access to best practices, career development and networking opportunities.
International Association of Universities
UPES is a member of the International Association of Universities (IAU). This enables the university to participate in IAU Annual Conferences, the General Conference, specialized workshops, seminars, experts meetings and various events. This also entitles UPES to receive regular reports on IAU activities and exchange information with the global higher education community.
ISO 9001:2008
UPES is an ISO compliant institutions since 2005 and is certified as an ISO 9001:2008 institution. The International Organization for Standardization (ISO) is the world's largest developer and publisher of International Standards. ISO 9001:2008 specifies requirements for a quality management system where an organization needs to demonstrate its ability to provide a product that meets customer and applicable regulatory requirements, enhance customer satisfaction through the effective application of the system, including processes for continual improvement of the system, and assure conformity to customer and applicable regulatory requirements.
